What It’s Like to Grow Up in an Israeli Settlement | Op-Docs הורד

  • This week we bring you Iris Zaki’s thought-provoking short film “Natural Born Settlers.” A self-described liberal from cosmopolitan Tel Aviv, Zaki wanted to get behind the politics of Israel’s controversial settlements in the occupied territories — so she moved there, temporarily, setting up an improvised cafe where she could chat with settlers from her own generation. Zaki’s previous Op-Doc was “The Shampoo Summit,” for which she took a job at a Christian Arab-owned hair salon, using a similarly playful, open-minded approach to transcend rhetoric and ideology and spark serious conversations with her fellow Israelis. It's not only those settlers who can't interact with their surroundings. This whole footage was taken without talking to a single Palestinian.

"When you meet individuals behind faceless groups, you see things in a more complex way". Exactly, which is why dehumanisation must be fought at all times.

The woman that got stabbed is just a deep down, good person. I wish there were millions more like her in the world.

Its like Pleasantville, they have "Hospitality Street" and "Joy Corner" and all these lush beautiful colors in order to hide the ugly reality beyond their walls.

I'm an Arab. A Palestinian who was born in Jordan. Politics have screwed everything up and created a big rift between people. Thank you for the nice video.

I think the farmer put it best, when you get to know your enemy, it becomes complex. The only way to indiscriminately harm others is to dehumanize them. It is much harder when they are your neighbors, employees, and, maybe, friends.

I hear alot of people complaining that they didnt interview arabs in this video. I hear your point, but I think perhaps this video was solely focused on interviewing settlers because that was its purpose. Not every video has to be a documentary. Their are plenty of videos out there that cover the palestinian perspective as well. Just because a video does not cover the entire spectrum does not mean it is propaganda or intentionally hiding something.

Acting like conservative Israelis are the “other” is pretty easy when you live in a liberal bubble in Tel-Aviv, reaping rewards from their insane policies
